Process for coating a substrate in selective areas comprises using a pattern carrier with surface impressions corresponding to the areas to be coated. The impressions are filled with the vapour of a coating medium, which is then applied to and condensed on the selective areas of the substrate. The coating medium is or contains printing ink.
