The device has a part which acts against the product to be packaged, the packaging or a part of the packaging. An electromagnetic linear drive (3) has a movable part (4) and a driving part (5), whereby the movable part is connected to the part which acts against the product or packaging. The part which acts against the product or packaging consists of a device which can accelerate the product etc. There is a device which guides the moving product, etc. and the moving part of the electromagnetic linear drive is connected to a ram (6) which acts directly upon the product.
