PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a spot color copying equipment whereby specified colors are copied by the same memory quantity as that of a single color copying equipment. SOLUTION: Encoding data stored in an encoding memory 6 is read for the portion of a block one by one and transmitted to an encoding separating 1001. The encoding separating part 1001 takes out specified color judging information at the lowest-order two-bit position of an in-block gradation distributing index code Ld and inspects whether the two bits are same values or not. When whole datain the block is black and white data, encoding data read from the encoding memory 6 is transmitted to a decoding part 1002 as it is and, at the same time, whole specified color signals are transmitted to a specified color flag signal holding part 1003. When black and white data and specified color data coexist, four bytes being the first half of the six bytes read from the memory 6 are transmitted to the decoding part 1002 and 16 kinds of blank data corresponding to the lower-order one bit in the respective picture elements of a gradation quantizing codeϕij at every picture element which is replaced by a specified color flag signal are successively transmitted. Thus, a decoding operation is executed in the decoding part 1002.
