PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain moisture absorbing functional fiber which has a large water absorption, high shape retention even after water absorption and is useful as a wadding material for bedding (particularly for 'FUTON') or as a filter because it can absorb and release moisture or water and shows deodorizing and antimicrobial properties by allowing a specific metal ion to react with a moisture-absorbing fiber formed from an water-absorbing polymer-like polymer. SOLUTION: A polymer from (meth)acrylic acid and the like is spun into fibers and the fibers are appropriately crosslinked to give moisture-absorbing fibers of good shape retention even after water absorption. The moisture- absorbing fiber is treated with a solution containing at least one of metal ion selected from Ag, Cu, Fe, Co and Ni to effect neutralization reaction and/or equilibrium substitution reaction whereby the fiber is given deodorizing and antimicrobial properties. This fiber has >=300wt.% water absorption, >=35% moisture absorption at 65% relative humidity, its moisture absorption rate is high, repetitively can absorb and release moisture with high fastness to washing. Thus, this fiber can be used in nonwoven, woven and/or knitted fabric, wadding for bedding or inner pads, spun yarns and others. |
