PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a red color generating fluorescent material formed by attachingγ-alumina on the surface of a specific fluorescent material, capable of effectively preventing the deterioration of the fluorescent material with time, showing a high brightness in light generation thereof, and useful as a red color generating component in a three wave length light generating-type fluorescent lamp. SOLUTION: This red color generating fluorescent material is obtained by attaching (B)γ-alumina on the surface of (A) 10<-4> -10<-2> mol europium activated yttrium oxide fluorescent material expressed by the formula: (Y1-x EUx )2 O3 (x is 0.01-0.20) based on A=1mol. This fluorescent material is obtained e.g. by dispersing the powder of the component (A) of which components are adjusted stoichiometrically, into a slurry obtained by dispersing a prescribed amount of the component (B) into water, mixing with an sufficient agitation for surface treating the component (A), filtering the mixture, drying the filtered lumps, and then heating at 350 deg.C for 1hr.
