Disclosed are a developer cartridge 5 providing an indication of whether or not the cartridge 5 has been used and an image forming apparatus using this cartridge. The cartridge 5 comprises a cylindrical body 6 a first developer storage chamber 60 for storing unused developer; an opening 63 formed in the chamber 60 ; a case having a cylinder 70 for rotatably retaining the cylindrical body 6, the cylinder 70 having an injection port 72 provided in association with the opening of the chamber 60 a second developer storage chamber 71 for storing used developer and setting means 68 selectively movable to a first position indicating an unused state of the developer cartridge and a second position indicating a used state thereof. The image forming apparatus comprising an endless latent carrier 30; means for forming an electrostatic latent image thereon developing means 4 for developing the electrostatic latent image the developer cartridge 5 as above drive means 8 driving the cylindrical body for developer exchange; detecting means CS for detecting the setting means and a control circuit for controlling the drive means 8 in accordance with the output of the detecting means CS.
