LASER DEPILATION APPARATUS AND METHOD

There is described an apparatus for the depilation of mammalian tissue (5) comprising a source of laser radiation (1) adapted to irradiate a target area (6) with continuous wave or quasi continuous wave laser radiation (7) having a wavelength in the range from 600 nm to 1100 nm and an energy density in the target area of between 2 J/cm<2> and 25 J/cm<2> for a duration of between 200 mu s and 5000 mu s so as to thereby selectively fatally damage the sub-dermal biological material associated with hair growth. There is also described a method for the depilation of mammalian tissue (5) comprising the steps of providing a source of laser radiation (1) directing the laser radiation (7) at a target area (6), and illuminating the target area (6) with continuous wave or quasi continuous wave laser radiation having a wavelength in the range from 600 nm to 1100 nm and an energy density in the target area of between 2 J/cm<2> and 25 J/cm<2> for a duration of between 200 mu s and 5000 mu s so as to thereby selectively fatally damage the sub-dermal biological material associated with hair growth.
