The box has a lid hinged along one edge to one of its end walls and contains a roll of material on a mandrel with its two ends supported by U-shaped recesses (311) in two inner panels (31, 33) set at a distance (h) from the two end walls (13). The roll is held in place inside the box by an additional panel (20) with two ends (21, 23) having inverted U-shaped cut-away portions fitting over the top of the mandrel ends. The panel (20) has a projection along one edge which acts as a brake and support for the material being dispensed from the roll, and has slits in it for a handle (5) which passes through an aperture in the lid for carrying the box. The box is made from a sheet material such as cardboard or a plastics, for example, PVC.
