The invention is a method and an apparatus for slotting a pipe having a longitudinal axis extending therethrough. A pipe bed supports and releasably secures the pipe to the pipe bed. A cutting head, including at least one cutter for slotting the pipe, is located adjacent the pipe bed. Positioning means relatively position the pipe bed and the cutting head such that the pi pe wall is perforated by the cutter at a location of contact between the cutter and the pipe wall. Longitudinal moving means relatively move the cutting hea d and the pipe bed for a distance in a direction which is substantially parall el to the longitudinal axis of the pipe secured to the pipe bed such that the pipe wall is cut by the cutter to form a slot having a length.
