<p>A cannula (3) is divided longitudinally into a camera chamber (27) and an instrument passage (29). The distal end of the camera (5) is sealed by an optically clear member (31). In use, a camera assembly (5) which includes a camera sled (19) on which are mounted a charge-coupled device camera (17) and lights (23) is inserted into the camera chamber (27), and a conventional laparoscopic instrument (7) is inserted into the patient through the instrument passage (29). The camera sled (19) is isolated from the patient by the cannula (3), eliminating the need to sterilize the camera sled (19). The instrument (7) is held in position by an attachment member (9) which extends from the cannula (3). This allows the surgeon to control the position of the instrument (7) and the camera (5) with one hand. The cannula includes a port (33) for connecting a source of carbon dioxide gas to inflate the patient's abdominal cavity, and a port (37) for connecting a conventional suction/irrigation trumpet-valve assembly.</p> |
