Contaminants in a liquid (5) are eliminated by heating (11) the liquid to above its evaporation temperature into the gas phase, and filtering (12) or sterilising the flow of gas before cooling it (9) into the liquid phase (16). Also claimed is a treatment unit for carrying out the method, having a liquid feed-pipe which branches into a cooling pipe leading to a first circuit of a heat exchanger and a pipe leading via a heater then a filter to the second circuit of the heat exchanger, the heater warming the liquid into the gas phase, and the filtered gas condensing in the heat exchanger.
