A protective cover for disposition over the crown of a single broccoli plant or the crown of a "bunch" (two or more of such plants) in order to maintain the freshness of the broccoli, potentially increase shelf life and to protect against contamination. The protective cover comprises a relatively thin cover film which is sized and shaped to form an internal compartment for receiving the crowns of the broccoli. A stretchable band surrounds an opening leading into the interior compartment and which allows the opening to expand sufficiently to extend over the crowns without damaging the same and to thereafter contract about the stem of the broccoli. Apertures are formed in the cover film in order to allow an outgasing of any gas and preclude any moisture condensation on the inside of the cover which should otherwise impair viewing of the broccoli plant.
