The invention relates to a process for preparing oligopeptide aldehydes, which comprises dissolving an oligopeptide alcohol, which is reversibly protected at the N-terminal end, in a buffered solvent mixture comprising a nonoxidizable, polar, water-immiscible solvent and a little water, adding a stoichiometric quantity of sodium bromide, oxidizing the alcohol, while cooling, with a catalytic quantity of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-N-oxyl (TEMPO), or a derivative thereof, treating the reaction suspension with an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite, and finally terminating the reaction by adding a reducing agent. The oligopeptide aldehydes which have been prepared in this way are to be used in detergents.
