PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high strength aluminum alloy excellent in hardenability and suitable for materials for vehicle, electrical equipment, building, etc., including automobile structural material. SOLUTION: This aluminum alloy has a composition which consists of, by weight, 0.3-1.6% Mg, 0.4-1.6% Si, 0.02-0.08% Sn, and the balance Al with inevitable impurities and in which the amount of Mg2 Si and the amount of excess Si in excess of Mg2 Si balance composition satisfy relational equation (the amount of Mg2 Si)>=1.6-1.2×(the amount of excess Si) [where (the amount of excess Si)=(the amount of total Si)-(the amount of Si as Mg2 Si) is satisfiedl. Further, the aluminum alloy can contain, as specific elements, small amounts of Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, Zr, V, Fe, and Ti. By this method, the high strength aluminum alloy, excellent in hardenability and having >=300MPa tensile strength after T6 treatment, can be obtained.
