PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a whisker excellent in heat resistance, chemical resistance and reinforcing performance, low in thermal conductivity and useful for reinforcing materials and heat insulating materials for various composite materials by forming a specific priderite type tatanate whisker. SOLUTION: This titanate whisker is represented by the general formula, AIv AIIw MIIx MIIIy Ti8-z O16 (AI is one or more kinds of alkali metals; AII is Ba; MII is one or more metals selected from Mg, Co, Ni, Zn, Cu and Mn; MIII is one or more kinds of metals selected from Al, Sc, Cr, Fe and Ga; (v), (w), (y), and (z) are each a real number satisfying the formulas, 0.5<=2x+y<=2.5, 2x+y=v+2w and z=x+y, except when (w) and (x) are simultaneously 0 and AI is K and MIII is Al) and has 0.1-10μm fiber diameter, 5-300μm fiber strength and 10-100 aspect ratio and has 0-70vol.% pores in the interior. The titanate whisker is produced by heating a potassium titanate fiber coated with the metal M and the metal A at 900-1,300 deg.C in the presence of a fusing agent such as an alkali metal chloride and cooling and growing the fiber.
