PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain sodium titanate whisker which is most suitable as a reinforcing material for composite materials by growing whisker length so as to have a specific value or above. SOLUTION: Titanium oxide (50g anatase powder) and about 1.21 sodium hydroxide are packed into a pressure cylinder 3 of an autoclave 1 comprising a pressure cylinder 3, a sealing lid 5 capable of covering and sealing the opening, a rotating shaft 7 hermetically passing through the sealing lid 5 and an agitating wing 9 rotated and driven by the rotating shaft 7 and synthesis of the titanate whisker is carried out at 250-350 deg.C for about 40hr while agitating to provide sodium titanate whisker having 1-3mm whisker length. Thereby, whisker of sodium titanate [of the formula, Na2 O.nTiO2 in which (n) is 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 9] having >=150μm whisker length, which has not been obtained hitherto can readily and stably be obtained and sufficient modulus and strength in WRP/WRM can be obtained by only mixing the whisker into a composite material.
