Heat exchange medium circulation through fiber matting layers in a blood heat exchanger (16) is improved by reducing the diameter of the core (34a) upon which the matting (32) is rolled between the end portions (33, 35) of the core (34a) so as to create a space between the innermost matting layer and the core (34a) which allows the heat exchange medium to flow in a direction substantially perpendicular to the matting (32).
