This invention relates to the process of generating and detecting "Alternate Cell Streams" in telecommunications systems using data blocks, frames, packets or cells and applying the "Alternate Cell Stream" technology to increase the functionality of telecommunications network equipment, such as increasing network survivability and traffic handling of ATM switching equipment under failure and congestion conditions.
