There is described an improved pipeline isolation tool (10) for plugging a pipeline at a predetermined location, comprising a housing (30) adapted for movement through a pipeline (1), the housing (30) having first and second ends (29, 41), seals (48) disposed annularly about the housing (30), the seals (48) being radially expandable into fluid sealing contact with an inner wall (2) of the pipeline (1), and a plurality of braking members (120) including grips (46) for frictionally engaging the inner wall (2) of said pipeline (1) to lock the isolation tool (10) in position against fluid pressure in the pipeline (1), the braking members (120) being selectively and repetitively movable between a first position in which the grips (46) are disengaged from the inner pipeline wall (2) and a second position in which the grips (46) engage the inner wall (2).
