The transmission has a continuously variable unit and a controller which monitors the transmission parameters as well as the control settings. The controller measures the actual road speed, engine speed and drive ratio and calculates target values for these. A feedback control adjusts the transmission to move to the target values without hunting eg. to achieve a steady state even if the original target conditions are not quite attained. The controller monitors the engine torque and compares the actual acceleration with the predicted acceleration, using values of the engine torque, road speed, drive ratio and feedback control factor etc.
