When a sheet 12 supplied from a tray 10 via guide 30 is to be partially returned to the tray (eg when the sheet has been imaged with one colour and is to be returned to the upstream side of the print head before receiving another colour), a member 34 is pivoted clockwise to the position shown to keep the returning sheet 12 clear of the pile of sheets remaining in the tray. The position of the member 34 may be controlled by a solenoid 54, or in dependence upon a capstan roller nip which is opened during return of the sheet from the printing head (figures 9-11), or in dependence upon the position of feed roller 24 which is raised during return of the sheet (figures 12-15).
