Tetra:borate-free lubricant comprises an aqueous solution of a mixture of an alkali triphosphate of formula: X5P3O10 and a compound of formula: Y5P3O10, (YPO3)w or ZBO2 (where, X, Y and Z = Na, K or Li; and X and Y are different and are Na and K; and w= 4000-6000). Also claimed is the production of the lubricant by mixing (KPO3)w in deionised water, and then adding the remaining components of the lubricant in solid form or in the form of an aqueous solution.
