A d.c. electric machine operating on the axial field principle, operable as a motor and a generator. The machine has a rotor (26) which can run in a housing (12) and having a plurality of electromagnets spaced from the axis of rotation, each with a coil winding (34) of a core (32) bearing one or more electric conductor(s), where the ends of the electrical conductors forming the coil are taken radially inwards and electrically connected to contacts with a contact area each, together forming a commutator, against which sliding contacts (42) contained in the housing and connectable to a d.c. source or a d.c. user are pressed. At equal angular distances on the inside of the housing faces (14a; 14b) opposite the faces of the cores (32), there are opposite pole faces of permanent magnets with opposite polarities successively in the peripheral direction.
