<p>An artificial muscle cell comprises an elastomeric substrate and an electromagnetic actuator in the form of a coil the turns of which are embedded in the substrate so as to be movable therewith. Enablement of the actuator causes an electromagnetic attraction between the turns of the coil thereby resulting in the contraction of the coil primarily along the longitudinal axis thereof, and the elastomer.
