A first arrester (3) moves along the axis (1a) of the two armrest adjusters (1,2) so as to move a second arrester (4) in adjuster (1) at right angles until it contacts the second adjuster (2) in the arrest position. Two arrester elements (4) can be moved in opposite directions in the first adjuster (1), using a central recess (1c) in adjuster (1) as ball guide (4). In the arrest position, the arrester (4) can make positive contact with any one of a series of cup-shaped holes in axis direction (1a) on the second adjuster. The first arrester (3) may have two areas in tandem, arrester (4) thus contacting the first area in the arrest setting and the second area when free, preferably using areas in the form of a guide face to force ball (4) into the arrested position and otherwise as a recess to partly enclose the arrester ball (4). Arrest can be assisted by a spring (9) and is initiated by an actuator (6) coupled to the first arrester (3).
