Intruder movement detection for surveillance and alarm system

The method involves using video cameras to monitor a specific area. The camera outputs are switched to a converter to provide an input to a processing unit that controls the output section, such as sirens and lighting. The images generated by the cameras are divided into specific sectors (17) and for each sector an average value for the brightness and/or colour is established. The average values are compared with a predetermined value. A pre alarm is generated if the reference is exceeded and a further comparison is made using a reference based upon a segment having an individual image (27) included. When a change occurs the full alarm is triggered.
