A transmission protocol is activated by activation information transmitted in the signalling channel between a communication system and a communication terminal. Data, interface control information and status information can be transmitted to and from a data interface (V.24) in the communication terminal in packet-oriented fashion. Peripheral devices connected to the data interfaces can be connected to the communication system at a greater distance. The control field includes information on whether or nor another data packet is being transmitted.
