A heat-ray absorbing coating composition comprising a film-forming resin component and at least one infrared absorber selected from among an infrared absorber (a) [0.1 to 900 parts by mass (per 100 parts by mass of the resin component, the same applies hereinafter) of a finely powdered semiconducting metal oxide], an infrared absorber (b) [0.01 to 20 parts by mass of cupric ions] and an infrared absorber (c) [0.01 to 10 parts by mass of a phthalocyanine compound]; and a process for imparting a heat-ray absorbing power by applying the above composition on the surface of a substrate. This substrate includes light-transmitting materials constituting the existing green houses.
