<p>This invention is a medical device for implantation in the tissue of a human body having a biocompatible coating thereon comprising a foreign body (11) formed of a material which is substantially biocompatible with the tissue of the human body. The foreign body (11) has a surface (16) adapted to come in contact with the tissue of the human body and is capable of being oxidized. The coating includes an organic linker (26) which is carried on the surface (16) and forms an oxidative coupling with the surface (16). A bioactive agent (32) is bonded to the organic linker (26) by a chemical reaction or photochemical function.</p> |
