The invention concerns a method of producing stainless steels, in particular special steels containing chromium and chromium-nickel. The method, which is carried out in a smeltery comprising at least two vessels and supplying a steel foundry, comprises the following steps: a) the charge, substantially consisting of solid and/or liquid raw materials, in particular scrap, containing metallic iron and alloy carriers of which some contain carbon, is melted down in a first vessel; b) when a temperature of 1460 DEG C is reached, the smelt is decarburized to a carbon content of less than 0.3 % by blasting with oxygen or oxygen mixtures and is heated to a tapping temperature of between 1620 and 1720 DEG C; c) the smelt is then brought to a final carbon content of less than 0.1 %; and d) simultaneously with the decarburizing blasting of the charge in the first vessel, a second charge is smelted in the second vessel.
