PURPOSE:To obtain in an industrially advantageous way the subject compound useful as e.g. a herbicide, by treating 4-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)-2-oxo-butyric acid with a transaminase-productive microbe in the presence of an amino group donor etc. CONSTITUTION:This new compound, L-2-amino-4-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl-)- butyric acid of formula II can be obtained by treating 4(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)-2-oxo-butyric acid with a microbe capable of producing one or more transaminases [e.g. Streptomyces hygroscopicus SF-1293 NP-50 strain (FERM BP-1368)] in the presence of both glutamic acid (salt) and aspartic acid (salt) as amino group donor. This compound has herbicidal activity, therefore serving as an ideal herbicide readily degradable and metabolizable by soilborne bacteria in the soil and free from fear of environmental pollution.
