Hybrid variable output airbag inflator (10) includes a cylindrical housing enclosing a first chamber (26) containing compressed gas in which first and second subchambers (32, 34) are situated which contain heating material which is selectively ignitable by squibs (36). A gas impermeable member (52) faced with a filter (54) confronts subchamber vent ports (44) which are sealed by frangible burst discs (46). Heated gas leaving the subchambers (32, 34) is constrained to change direction a plurality of times before leaving the housing via an exit port (48) which is closed by a main burst disc (50). The member (52) may be connected by an annular apertured skirt (56) to a dome (20) separating the first chamber (26) from the subchambers (32, 34).
