Crochet machine (10) has a number of needles (6) spaced apart along needle bar (4) positioned between bearing base (2) mounted side standards (30) with device (7) to impart longitudinal reciprocating movement (A). A number of eye pointed needles (11) spaced apart parallel to the needle bar and in front of the needles,each engaging a respective warp thread and having device (14) to give reciprocating motion (B) parallel to a longitudinal extension of the needle bar. Provided is needle transverse movement mechanism (25) imparting the needles with an alternative crossing movement perpendicular to the longitudinal movement and the transverse motion of the eye pointed needles such that they have a relative movement circumscribing the longitudinal movement of the needles by a combination of crossing and transverse movements of the eye pointed needles. Also claimed is a warp knitting process using the appts.
