PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and safely obtain an ether compound widely useful for solvents, cosmetics, detergent compositions, lubricants, emulsifiers, etc. SOLUTION: This ether compound (e.g. methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol) is obtained by reaction between a hydroxy compound of formula I (R1 is a 1-40C alkyl, etc.; A is a 2-12C alkylene; (n) is 0-30) (e.g. methyl Cellosolve) and a carbonyl compound of formula II (R2 and R3 are each a 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl, etc.) (e.g. a 1-12C chain ketone) in a hydrogen atmosphere in the presence of a palladium catalyst borne on e.g. carbon. The reaction is pref. carried out while eliminating water as a by-product; specifically, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a dehydrating agent (e.g. anhydrous magnesium sulfate, anhydrous sodium sulfate) at 0.1-50mol% based on the final ether compound. |
