PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a laser material useful as a solid laser pump light source at 1.03μm band for exciting a Pr fluoride fiber. SOLUTION: This method for producing a laser material comprises making the film thickness of a garnet single crystal to >=300μm and the growth rate of the garnet single crystal to 0.15-0.34μm/minute when the laser material composed of an NdYb-codoped garnet single crystal base of the formula (Y1-a-b-c Nda Ybb Nc )3 (Al1-d Md )5 O12 (N is an element of Ga, La or Lu; M is an element of Mg or Zr; (a), (b), (c) an (d) are each a number in 0.02<=a<=0.07, 0.02<=b<=0.7, 0<=c<=0.96, 0.04<=a+b+c<1 and 0<=d<=0.5) is grown on a Gd-Ga garnet single crystal substrate by the liquid epitaxial method.
