The operating mechanism, e.g. for an external window shutter, consists of a supporting plate (2) which is mounted on one wall of the shutter casing and has a curved surface (4), either concave or convex, interacting with a matching surface on the drive gear housing (7). The housing contains two meshing gears (20) which lie in different planes - one with a hub connected to the roller shutter shaft and the other via universal joints to a cranked handle. A groove or rib (9) on the curved surface (4) of the supporting panel guides the gear housing as it is moved from one position to another, and the two gears are helical gears with a pitch of some 30 degrees.
