Water in the kettle body (1) is heated through the base (2) by an underlying resistive element (3). A diffusion plate (4) between the base and the element distributes heat evenly over the base. Integral with this plate, or fixed intimately to it, is a strip (10) of metal of high thermal conductivity, e.g. copper, aluminium, which, passing out of the element compartment (19), rises into thermal contact with the cut-out (16, 17) in a zone (18) under the handle (20) not directly exposed to radiation from the element. This zone also houses the mains connection pins (15), manual control (26) and a steam trip (23) connected by a channel (21) and orifice (22) to the main container. A cordless kettle, plugging into a powered plinth, is similarly designed.
