A device (1) for removing material from a high temperature environment comprises a venturi pump (2) connected to a suction tube (3) which has a cooling jacket (7) (not identified) surrounding a portion of the free end of the tube (3) that enters the furnace. The free end of the suction tube (3) is manually positioned adjacent the material to be collected which is sucked into the tube (3) under the influence of the vacuum generated by the venturi pump (2). The material is carried away from the venturi pump (2) by the fluid driving the pump and is thereby rapidly cooled to a temperature at which it can easily be handled. High pressure fluid jets (30) (not shown) and (31) are provided to break the material into small pieces and to clear blockages to the tube. The device is useful for removing scale and other waste from a furnace, without the need to cool the furnace. |
