The system consists of loading the fish, once taken on board, into open-topped boxes (4) made from parallel piped tubular frames with metal mesh walls. The boxes are moved into pre-storage tanks (7) containing refrigerated sea water at 0 to -2 deg C. for 24-36 hours for cooling, and then transferred to freezing tank (9) containing brine at a temperature low enough to permit rapid freezing (-18 to -22 deg C) for a period of 3-4 days. After freezing, the fish is moved for dry storage into a refrigerated hold (12), with the various movements of the boxes ensured by standard handling procedures. The fish is subsequently unloaded from the vessel in the same metal boxes.
