A gas-tight tube out of composite cardboard for cans is formed by welding the polymer coatings of neighboring layers, a linearly-focused halogen light source (26) being employed. In addition, a layer (27) which absorbs and transforms the halogen light into heat can be provided in the area of the later welding seam. Furthermore, devices for carrying out the process and suitable composite materials are described.
