PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a display device thin in thickness, high in brightness, high in reliabil ity and low in power consumption, and capable of making a large-screen, high- definition full-color display by performing light shield/nonshield control over a light shielding means at the time of illumination for every light emission wavelength. SOLUTION: A multicolored light emitting means 103 constituted by arranging semiconductor light emitting elements which emit lights of R, G, and B on a substrate having a reflecting function is connected optically to a light guide plate 102. Further, a liquid crystal device as a light shielding means 101 which is driven in synchronism with the light emitting elements is arranged on the top surface of the light guide plate 102 across a diffusion film. And, the light shielding means 101 performs light shield/nonshield control over the light emission by the multicolored light emitting means 103 with an information signal synchronized with the multicolored light emitting means 103. In this case, a light emission driving means as a driving means emits lights in order for every light emission wavelength of the multicolored light emitting means and a light shield driving means is synchronized with the multicolored light emitting means 103 to make the light shielding means 101 change the light shield time of each color of one pixel according to an image signal, thereby obtaining multicolored representation with one pixel. |
