The instrument can be a talking drum, or a kettle drum (22) with skins (26,27) over the open ends and forming the vibratory bodies. These are held in place by clamping tyres (28,29) along which the tightening mechanism (4) is moved so as to press them against the skins. The mechanism can incorporate a steel rope forming an enclosing loop. It can be operated by a pedal (15) so as to alter the diameter.
