PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device having enough strength and excellent display characteristics without influencing the alignment state of alignment layers or the liquid crystal material by using a polysiloxane or a metal oxide having a mesh structure as a columnar spacer. SOLUTION: The columnar spacer is made of a material which does not substantially dissolve in a liquid crystal material, and namely, polysiloxane or a metal oxide having a mesh structure is used. In this case, it is preferable that polysiloxane has R-Si-H bonds (wherein R is unsubstd. or substd. aromatic group) and that the metal oxide is an oxide of at least one metal selected from Al, Ti and Zr. Further, pigments or dyes are preferably dispersed in the material which does not substantially dissolve in the liquid crystal material. By this method, characteristics such as light-shielding property can be added to the columnar spacer. |
