SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR COMPRESSING IMAGE DATA

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the amount of required storage areas by using the compression system of block base. SOLUTION: The data compression system of opened block base uses two parallel independent compression networks. Networks 20 and 22 on one side provide fixed compression and networks 14 and 16 on the other side provide variable compression. Compression data are selected from one side or the other side of these networks so as to provide sufficient picture quality and desired compression coefficient. The outputs of fixed compression networks are selectively used 25 when a bit counter 18 decides that the outputs of variable compression networks can not achieve the desired compression coefficient.
