To improve the accuracy of measurement of a fluid level (H) in a tank (2) from the timing of ultrasonic pulses and a mean speed of sound ( nu ) the mean speed of sound ( nu ) is to be extrapolated from at least two reference speeds of sound in the fluid (90). It is thus possible to achieve a measurement precision within less than a milimetre regardless of the fluid level (H). To apply the process, a device (1) with a main measurement path, at least one device for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic pulses, at least two reference paths to determine sonic speeds and a computer unit (50) is proposed, in which the computer unit (50) extrapolates the means speed of sound ( nu ) from the sonic speeds.
