In a method of operating a (cylinder) vacuum cleaner, the (floor) nozzle of which is pushed by the operator to and fro over the material to be cleaned, and in which an effective underpressure is generated at least in the region of the bearing plate of the (floor) nozzle head by a rotary blower, it is proposed that the actual direction of movement of the (floor) nozzle (10) be detected and the underpressure supplied thereto be varied dependently upon said direction. Here, additional quantities of air are selectively supplied, preferably during the forward movement, to the region of the bearing plate of the (floor) nozzle via by-pass apertures (16), thus contributing to the cleaning effect. |
