Process and apparatus for reversible and irreversible immobilisation of microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoa, diatoms and larval stages or macro-organisms such as barnacles, mussels and algae suspended in aqueous solution, is achieved by generating strong impulse and/or high frequency alternating- and/or migratory fields with a field strength of 10 kV/m - 50 MV/m and a frequency of 1 kHz - 500 MHz via microelectrodes formed on a substrate, in a region of the liquid of about 3 to 10 times the average electrode separation from the surface of the substrate carrying microelectrodes.
