A gas generator for an airbag system of a motor vehicle is constructed out of several housings (10, 11) which are connected to one another by means of housing parts (12, 13, 19, 25), particularly out of a combustion chamber housing for containment of a fuel which can be activated and out of an expansion chamber housing for a gas which streams in after activation of the fuel. One of the housing parts (13, 19) for interconnection exhibits a bearing surface (15, 23) with a profiled surface structure which is dimensionally stable and against which a deformable opposing surface (14, 24) of the other housing part (12, 25) is pressed which exhibits a lower mechanical hardness. The housing parts of individual housings of a gas generator for an airbag system are permanently connected with one another by means of these connecting joints. On the one hand, the connecting joint provides for high stability and long life and, on the other hand, it represents an extremely simple and rapid method for sealing or connection.
