Fast removal of lime from piping and mains water

Lime is removed from a liquid, preferably mains water and the pipes through which the water passes, by a method in which elevated voltage preferably 28-36 V is applied to two poles in contact with the water to crystallise and precipitate the lime present in the pipes. After this breakdown phase, the voltage is reduced to 5-6 V so as to crystallised out and precipitate lime from the water continuously. Either direct or alternating voltage may be used. Also claimed is an arrangement for carrying out the process in which a housing (1) is interposed in the piping (4) and contains two poles (9, 10) which are immersed in the water at a spacing (a) slightly more than their short circuit spacing.
