The forks tilt on the section (11) sliding and tilting at the jib head. With the prongs horizontal, the fork can be lowered onto a surface (6) below the plane in which sliding takes place. The jib can have a section sliding horizontally and on which the fork is movable in the vertical direction by a drive mechanism. The tilt axis (13) can be at the side of the fork area accommodating the load. Tilting or vertical movement can be by means of a hydraulic ram.
